Multitudinous Monday

oblinaknit logo:

Infatuated with fabric, fiber, and beads, Amy left her career as a scientist and developed her love of handmade into a business - oblinaknit - hand knits, totes & goodies galore! Her handmade totes and accessories, along with her line of hand-created jewelry ('oblinaknit bejeweled') can be found in her etsy shop as well as a few select shops. She also participates in craft shows and weekly markets in the DC metro area.

For the Holiday Sampler, Oblinaknit contributed 50+ bobby pins and matchbook notepads

Another fabulous 50+er is Absolutely Small. I can say fabulous because I've met the creator, Claire Chambers, in person and she is as sweet as she is creative.

absolutely small logo 2:

"The purpose of Absolutely Small is to create and distribute approachable, enjoyable, and live-with-able art and art toys. I create in plush because you cannot hug a painting. I create in paint because it can take you places that nothing else can. If I can get people to smile or laugh at what I've created, then I've succeeded."

Holiday Samplers subscribers could have one of Absolutely Small's Chickenpants Limited prints: "Chickenpants Limited prints are released every month in editions of only 30. Each one is signed and numbered by the artist. The Chickenpants Limited prints are made with the goodness of Chickenpants plush toys. All the Chickenpants plushies are my original creations. Although they follow a basic pattern, each one is unique and has different embellishments. I think you'll find they each have a unique personality, too. Accept no substitutes!"

Help Save Handmade Toys in the USA from the CPSIA!

(information taken from Handmade Toy Alliance)

On February 10th, 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) will go into effect. Among other things, the CPSIA bans lead and phthalates in toys, mandates third-party testing and certification for all toys and requires toy makers to permanently label each toy with a date and batch number.

All of these changes will be fairly easy for large, multinational toy manufacturers to comply with. Large manufacturers who make thousands of units of each toy have very little incremental cost to pay for testing and update their molds to include batch labels.

For small American, Canadian, and European toymakers and manufacturers of children's products, however, the costs of mandatory testing will likely drive them out of business.

  • A toymaker, for example, who makes wooden cars in his garage in Maine to supplement his income cannot afford the $4,000 fee per toy that testing labs are charging to assure compliance with the CPSIA.

  • A work at home mom in Minnesota who makes cloth diapers to sell online must choose either to violate the law or cease operations.

  • A small toy retailer in Vermont who imports wooden toys from Europe, which has long had stringent toy safety standards, must now pay for testing on every toy they import.

  • And even the handful of larger toy makers who still employ workers in the United States face increased costs to comply with the CPSIA, even though American-made toys had nothing to do with the toy safety problems of 2007.

  • The CPSIA simply forgot to exclude the class of children's goods that have earned and kept the public's trust: Toys, clothes, and accessories made in the US, Canada, and Europe. The result, unless the law is modified, is that handmade children's products will no longer be legal in the US.

    How You can Help

    Here's today's question:

Q: The Moment of Stars was the first shop on Etsy, opening on June 18, 2005. What date did the Moment of Stars Photography shop on Etsy open?

    Ok, now you A!

    Monday of Moments
Merry Monday! A lot of us are recuperating from the indulgences of holiday parties and family get-togethers (especially the family get-togethers). I feel hungover from food which in turn makes me feel guilty for how much I have. So, my husband and I bought a treadmill so at least I wouldn't feel guilty about gaining the holiday weight, though we feel guilty about buying the treadmill. What a viscious cycle of guilt. Enough of that...here's to a more modest new year.

You don't have to feel guilty about treating yourself to a Holiday Sampler...there's still some in stock and at a reduced price, too! Awesome, huh? So, if you have a glutton for all things indie arts and crafts, check out the Sampler shop! I was, and that's how I discovered the first shop on Etsy, Moment of Stars.

Now Fawne is taking photos with vintage and toy cameras offering prints on Moment of Stars Photography. Celebrate the magic of vintage cameras and plastic lens!

Moment of Stars Photography contributed 100+ 4" x 6" Double Exposure Print of a carnival ride, taken with a Holga. This print, filled with bright contrasting colors, is a vivid recollection of the last time I went to the state fair, though I was hammered on gin and Mellow Yellows. Cool!

    Thanks for the fun, Fawne!
